The Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar will host the first edition of pickleball’s Mediterranean Open, a tournament that will include over 200 players of various nationalities on 8, 9 and 10 December 2023, and will be organised by Repueblo y Reimpulso in collaboration with Jubilenial.

It will be the first time in its history that the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar has hosted a pickleball event, and it will be opening its doors for participants to stay in the sports complex’s accommodation, offering them a unique immersive experience. Staging the finals on the Centre Court will provide another big attraction for fans.

"This Open allows pickleball to take a step forward, both in the professional and amateur games in terms of inclusivity and in social terms. Thinking of everyone as a whole drives positive change in sport”, said the director of the Mediterranean Open, Luis de Cristóbal.

“We’re so excited about hosting this event at the academy. We’re aware of the huge growth pickleball is experiencing and it will be great if players of this sport come to enjoy our facilities. We’re sure it will be a huge success”, said Joan Suasi, Director of Tournaments at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar.

This edition of the Mediterranean Open includes three main categories: elite -for 4.5 and 5.0 level players-, amateur – for players between 3.0 and 4.0 -, and the Jubilenial Tournament, for over 55s. In addition, Friday 9 December will see the NO LIMITS tournament, designed for those with intellectual disabilities, thanks to an agreement between the Mediterranean Open and various social entities.

Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of tennis, padel, badminton and table tennis. It was created in the 60s and it is one of the fastest-growing sports in the US, now with over 9 million players around the world. In Spain the sport is also booming as thousands of new players start to pick up a racket.
