Sports cardiology is a medical specialty aimed at the morphological and functional assessment of the cardiovascular system of any person who engages in physical activity. Its main goals are to prevent and diagnose possible pathologies, as well as to improve sports performance through the physiological study of the cardiorespiratory system. Cardiological studies allow us to detect possible signs of cardiac fatigue, and assess congenital heart disease and/or rhythm disorders.

By obtaining this data, the Quirón Salud medical team can tell our coaches if it is necessary to adapt the training of any of the players.

At the Academy, we offer the following cardiological tests:

  • Electrocardiogram:

An electrocardiogram records the heart’s electrical signals. It allows your health to be monitored and quickly detects if there are heart problems. It obtains data on heart rate and frequency and detects potential structural anomalies, among other pathologies.

We recommend an annual electrocardiogram for anyone playing sports regularly, regardless of their age group.

Any player at the Rafa Nadal Academy can have this test performed at its facilities under the supervision of the Quirón Salud medical team.

  • Spirometry:

Spirometry is a test that allows the functioning of the lungs to be assessed by measuring the amount of air inhaled (flow), the amount exhaled and the speed of exhalation. It is used to diagnose respiratory pathologies such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other diseases affecting breathing. For sports purposes, airflow can be measured during physical activity, giving us an idea of each patient’s respiratory efficiency.

  • Echocardiogram:

The echocardiogram is a diagnostic test that, through high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound), provides information about the shape, size and strength of the heart, the movement and thickness of its walls and the functioning of its valves. It is the most important examination to determine how the heart valves are functioning and how blood is circulating through the heart. In addition, it can also supply information about the arteries.

  • Ergometry:

Ergometry is an exercise test without gas analysis. This technique consists of the analysis of an intense physical exercise to assess if there are alterations in the heart during the exercise, either in its rhythm or in its blood supply, which might indicate the existence of a circulation problem. This study is monitored by the use of an active electrocardiogram.

  • Ergospirometry:

Ergospirometry (cardiopulmonary exercise tests [CPET]) holistically and non-invasively studies the body's comprehensive response to exercise. It is carried out through a rational analysis of the respiratory, cardiovascular, hematopoietic, neuropsychological and musculoskeletal systems. The results obtained from this test allow us to better determine training times and areas in high-performance sports.
