Team Rafa was crowned champion of the Rafa Nadal Academy Slam after defeating Team Murray 4-3 in thrilling matches that celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Rafa Nadal Academy and allowed fans to enjoy Rafa Nadal on a tennis court in Manacor once again.
The tie was the main storyline from the start. Carlos Moyà and Richard Gasquet gave Team Rafa the first point after edging out Marat Safin and Fabio Fognini 10-9. Team Murray’s response came quickly: Andy Murray and Dominic Thiem won 10-9 against Rafa Nadal and David Ferrer, before Fognini and Thiem made it 1-2 with their 10-8 victory over Gasquet and Ferrer.
Team Rafa responded emphatically. Rafa Nadal and Richard Gasquet leveled the tie with a 10-0 win over Murray and Safin, and Moyà and Ferrer turned the overall score around by defeating Thiem and Safin 10-8. However, Team Murray fought back: Murray and Fognini defeated Nadal and Moyà 10-7, leaving the score tied 3-3 after six matches and taking the Rafa Nadal Academy Slam to a decisive tie-break.
With everything to play for, Rafa Nadal and Carlos Moyà faced Andy Murray and Fabio Fognini once again. The Spanish pair prevailed 7-5, giving Team Rafa the decisive point and the final 4-3 victory before a packed center court celebrating the Academy’s first ten years.
