The country that witnessed the birth of padel witnessed the first Premier Padel tournament held in Cancún this week, with a strong turnout and extraordinary feedback from the players. The event was held at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center, located within the Grand Palladium Select Costa Mujeres and TRS Coral Hotel, allowing players to enjoy a week of padel and competition at the highest level, while also enjoying the amenities offered by one of the best resorts in the country.

“I dare say this is going to be the best tournament of the season,” declared Aranzazu Osoro, world number 18. “It’s a luxury to have everything in one place, in a wonderful hotel and just two minutes from the courts,” affirmed Gemma Triay. Martita Ortega wanted to go one step further: “Expectations were high, but the tournament has far exceeded them. The hotel is amazing and it’s been a fantasy. Playing here is very special, and being in places linked to Rafa (Nadal) makes us feel at home.” Meanwhile, Lucía Saínz (11th in the FIP rankings) highlighted the more sentimental aspect of the event. The tournament was impressive; the promoter (Jorge Mañé) made a titanic effort. It’s a tournament that touches the heart.”

In the women’s draw, Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea had a perfect week, not dropping a single set. Their second consecutive title came after an immaculate final in which they defeated Martita Ortega and Sofía Araujo 6-3, 6-1.

In the men’s draw, Juan Lebrón and Franco Stupaczuk were crowned in Cancún, defeating Tolito Aguirre and Gonza Alfonso 6-2, 6-3, becoming the third pair to win a title this season.

Both Gemma Triay and Franco Stupaczuk, who recently joined the Rafa Nadal Academy as padel ambassadors, won the title in the presence of Maribel Nadal herself, who also congratulated Rodrigo Ovide, the academy’s new head of methodology. The celebration was complete, as both Martita Ortega and Carlos Pozzoni (Ortega and Stupaczuk’s coach) are also key players in the Rafa Nadal Academy Team at the Hexagon Cup.

Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar’s Deputy General Manager, Maribel Nadal, gave a very positive assessment of the event : “Hosting the P1 tournament at our academy in Kuwait and now this P2 tournament at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Center in Costa Mujeres further strengthens our commitment to padel and its internationalization. We are very grateful to both promoter Jorge Mañé for his trust and to all the players for their positive words about the tournament. This encourages us to continue growing, and we hope to be able to hold the tournament here for many more years.”
