The second international men’s ITF World Tennis Tour by LG tournament held at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar ended with victory for French player Evan Furness.

Having lost both finals, he reached in 2020 to Carlos Alcaraz, the Frenchman has flown out of the blocks in 2021, reaching the final last week, where he eventually lost to the Swiss Antoine Bellier.

Not one to be discouraged, Furness produced a spectacular second week, cruising past Peter Heller, Stefano Napolitano and Sadio Doumbia and beating the German Tobias Simon in the semis. Under the Manacor sun, on his fourth attempt, Furness finally took the title by beating 17-year-old Danish promise, Holger Rune (junior French Open champion in 2019) 6-2 5-7 6-0.

A big turnout from French competitors at the tournament also translated into a 7-5 4-6 [10-7] victory in the doubles for Matteo Martineau and Arthur Reymond over the duo formed by German player Peter Heller and the Belgian Jeroen Vanneste.

Next month, the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar will become the epicentre of professional tennis in Spain as it hosts another three women’s ITF tournaments. In addition, Manacor will welcome some of tennis’ young guns when it hosts the ITF Junior tournament from 8 to 14 February.
