Casper Ruud capped off a dream week at the San Diego Open this Sunday. The Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar player, who was the second seed in the Californian tournament, defeated Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-0, 6-2 in just 61 minutes to claim his sixth ATP Tour title, and his first on hard courts.
Furthermore, the 22-year-old Norwegian has become the first player of the season to accumulate five titles, having also triumphed this year on the clay of Geneva, Bastad, Gstaad, and Kitzbühel. Casper, who this week had Academy coach Pedro Clar back on his side of the court, surpasses Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexandre Zverev on this list, who all collected four titles in 2021.

This result also allows him to climb the rankings in the Race to Turin, which determines the eight qualifiers for the Nitto ATP Finals. Before this week, Ruud was ranked ninth in this ranking. But thanks to his strong tournament in San Diego, where he only dropped one set en route to the title (in the semifinals against Grigor Dimitrov), Ruud will appear in eighth place on Monday, surpassing Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.
In addition, Casper has become the third tennis player with the most victories on the 2021 ATP Tour, accumulating a total of 47 and being surpassed only by Stefanos Tsitsipas (51) and Daniil Medvedev (48).
