“I always work with one goal; to improve as a player and as a person”. This quote from Rafa Nadal reflects the DNA of the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar which, thanks to the combination of a demanding tennis coaching plan and an American academic system, educates its young players in the values, virtues and aptitudes that Rafa himself adheres to.

The students at the Academy receive life coaching in which they develop and put into practice virtues such as hard work, humility, tolerance, patience, respect, integrity, discipline, order and commitment.

To carry out this coaching, the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar has a team of people and coaches specialised in different areas of teaching that constantly help the students, motivating them to persevere in the face of adversity and supporting them in their daily lives.

With vast experience at prestigious teams such as Benfica, Carlos Fernandes, the Head of Psychology at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, was responsible for designing a methodology based on Rafa Nadal’s values by means of a teaching plan based on 3 pillars.

Every day, before starting their academic classes, the students attend the “Sport Science: Building a Champion” class, in which, over 10 months, different subjects are covered relating to behaviour, skills, aptitudes and values applied to events both on and off the tennis court. On Monday, the class focuses on tennis, Tuesday covers nutrition and fitness training, Thursdays are for psychology and values and on Fridays students work on their technique using technology and video analysis.

Monday: Technique, strategy and development of on-court aptitudes

Tuesday: Nutrition and fitness training

Thursday: Psychology and values

Friday: Video analysis

In addition, once a week, all the students attend a half-hour, participative and interactive session in which the importance of the above-mentioned values is reinforced.

By means of a gamification system, the teachers, tennis coaches, fitness coaches and academic supervisors score the players every week based on the development of their values and behaviour in 4 areas: school, tennis, fitness and boarding.

The end goal is to motivate the players to integrate these values into their daily behaviour with weekly, quarterly and annual objectives.
