After hosting three men’s ITF and two Junior ITF tournaments, the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar has now held Spain’s first women’s ITF World Tennis Tour event of the year, which concluded on Sunday with victory for French player Nahia Berecoechea over the Portuguese Inês Murta in a close final that ended 6-4 7-6(6).

 

The last Spaniard in the competition, Alba Rey, bowed out in the semi-finals after a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Berecoechea. In the lower half of the draw, Inês Murta upset the second favourite Ioana Loredana Rosca with a resounding 6-1, 6-0. One of the event’s surprise packages was Ariana Geerlings. The Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar student reached the quarter-finals, where she lost to the eventual champion.

 

In doubles, Inês Murta did manage to get her hands on the title alongside Rebecca Munk Mortensen with whom she defeated Israeli team Mika Dagan Fruchtman and Shavit Kimchi, 6-0, 6-3. This week will see the second of three consecutive tournaments scheduled to take place at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar.
