Richard Gasquet will be part of Rafa Nadal’s team in the Academy’s 10th anniversary exhibition match

Frenchman Richard Gasquet has been announced as the first member of the team led by Rafa Nadal for the Rafa Nadal Academy Slam, the exhibition match to be held on October 3 in Manacor (Mallorca) to mark the 10th anniversary of the Rafa Nadal Academy.

Gasquet will be part of Team Rafa, which will face Team Murray, captained by Andy Murray, in a very special day that will bring together some of the biggest names in world tennis to celebrate the Academy’s 10-year history.

The Frenchman’s presence will be especially emotional for Rafa, given the close relationship that has linked their careers almost from the very beginning. Both were seen from a very young age as two of the great talents of their generation, and their paths crossed long before they reached the professional tour.

One of those early meetings took place at the Les Petits As tournament, where Rafa Nadal and Richard Gasquet faced each other when they were both 12. That match was one of the first times their paths crossed on court, long before they went on to share the sport’s biggest tournaments for more than two decades.

Gasquet finished his career with 16 ATP titles, was crowned Davis Cup champion with France in 2017, and won an Olympic bronze medal in doubles at the London 2012 Olympic Games, among many other major achievements. The Frenchman, a former world No. 7, also reached three Grand Slam semifinals and recorded more than 600 ATP-level wins.

Next Saturday, October 3, Nadal and Gasquet will share the court again—this time as teammates on Team Rafa—in a celebration that will combine competition, entertainment and plenty of surprises to mark 10 years of the Rafa Nadal Academy.
