The Rafa Nadal Academy player her second title of the season by coming from behind to defeat Jessica Pegula in the final of the WTA 500 Washington Open and received congratulations from Rafa Nadal on her remarkable achievement.
Alex Eala’s extraordinary season continues to reach new heights. The Rafa Nadal Academy graduate captured the WTA 500 Washington Open, the biggest title of her career so far, after producing a stunning comeback to defeat American Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a final that was played over two days due to rain.
At just 21 years old, the Filipino star has now won her second title of the season, following her triumph at the Birmingham Open (WTA 125) a few weeks ago, further confirming her emergence among the world’s elite players.
Eala’s path to the title was anything but easy. Throughout the week, she defeated some of the biggest names in women’s tennis, including Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, Elina Svitolina, former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, and finally top seed Jessica Pegula in the championship match.
The victory marks another historic milestone for Philippine tennis and for a player who has continued to grow since arriving at the Rafa Nadal Academy. Thanks to her title in Washington, Eala climbs into the WTA Top 20 for the first time in her career, reaching a new career-high ranking.
Following her victory, Rafa Nadal congratulated Eala publicly on social media: “Congratulations, Alex Eala! What an incredible week in Washington! A well-deserved trophy for all the hard work. Congratulations to the Philippines and to the entire Rafa Nadal Academy team!”
The Washington title caps off a remarkable few months for the Filipino player. After winning her first-ever grass-court title in Birmingham, Eala also enjoyed a historic run at Wimbledon, where she reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time after defeating, among others, defending champion Iga Swiatek.
After lifting the trophy in Washington, Eala reflected on the significance of her achievement: “This title means so much to so many people. It’s a dream come true, and I hope this is just the beginning of many more great things,” the Filipino player said after the final.
