Dani Rincón shines in the first round of the Rafa Nadal Open by Movistar

The victory of Dani Rincón , junior champion of the 2021 US Open, over Abdullah Shelbayh in the duel between players from the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar stood out on the third day of the Rafa Nadal Open by Movistar, which concluded the first round of the Challenger tournament.

Rincón and Shelbayh offered an epic battle that lasted 2 hours and 21 minutes, resolved in favor of the Spanish tennis player in the tie-break of the third and final set (6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1)).

The third day of the tournament, which runs until Sunday, August 31 at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, also saw the elimination of top seed Otto Virtanen, who was defeated by Britain’s Hamish Stewart (6-3, 6-3), who came from the qualifying round.

In another notable match, Monegasque Valentin Vacherot defeated Spaniard Martín Landaluce (6-1, 7-6(5)) in 1 hour and 42 minutes.

As for the rest of the Spanish representation, Alberto Barroso achieved an important victory against the Slovak Norbert Gombos (7-5, 4-6, 6-2), while John Echeverria lost to the British Stuart Parker (6-7(3), 6-0, 6-0).

The Rafa Nadal Open by Movistar is seeking its seventh different champion, following Croatian Duje Ajdukovic’s victory over Matteo Gigante in the 2024 final. Previous title winners were Bernard Tomic (2018), Emil Ruusuvuori (2019), Lukas Lacko (2021), Luca Nardi (2022), and Hamad Medjedovic (2023).
